Our favourite home electric car chargers (2026)

We are often asked by our customers for recommendations for EV chargers to install at home.

What we recommend usually depends on each individual customer’s circumstances, the type of car they have and the answers to a few key questions.

Firstly, we recommend you buy your EV charger through your electrical installer if possible.  This ensures the installer is responsible for both the installation and the functioning of the charger.  If there are any problems your installer will be responsible for fixing them.

Having said that, some car brands supply a charger with a car purchase, and we are very happy to install these as well. Just keep in mind that the quality of chargers supplied for free can vary greatly.

Do you have solar panels (or would like to get them in the future)?

If so, we usually recommend installing a smart charger that can use solar power when it is available.

Many electricians will recommend using the same brand of charger as your solar system.

We don’t usually recommend this, as many of the solar brand chargers are not good quality, have short warranties or are extremely expensive (there are a couple of exceptions though).

Any good quality solar aware charger will integrate with your solar system, if installed correctly.

Some people love remote charging technology, and others prefer to be able to plug in without needing to use their phone!

We have many options available, with photos and prices all available in our shop if you’d like more information at all.

Our most commonly recommended EV charger currently is either the Evnex E2 Flex, or the Evnex E2 Core or Plus. See more information below.

Check out some of our recent installations on social media, and click on the photos or head to the shop for more details.

Our top picks in 2026 for simple charging (no solar)

Evnex E2 Flex

Evnex E2 Flex EV charger - for This is Electric installation only
$799.00

Please note: this product is only available to purchase for Tasmanian customers of This is Electric. For other customers, please purchase this product directly from Evnex.

We are required to refund any purchases made where we are not installing the product ourselves.

The Evnex E2 Flex is a 7.4kW single-phase EV charger perfect for homes without solar.

It charges quickly and safely from the grid, and comes complete with smart scheduling and overload protection, so you can keep your home safe and your car moving with just a few taps.

If you get solar later down the track, you can upgrade to solar smarts for a one-off fee of $349. If you're planning on getting solar installed in the next 12 months, we'd suggest getting our E2 Core or E2 Plus.

What's included?

  • Evnex E2 Flex smart EV charger (7.4kW)

  • 5m tethered charging cable

  • Mobile app (including access to charging features)

  • Home overload protection

  • Includes power sensor (CT)

  • 7-day local customer service, product updates, and ongoing support

  • User manual

  • Installation manual (for use by professional electricians only)

  • Installation mounting hardware (for use by professional electricians only)

Upgradable features

  • Add on solar smarts for $349 - a software update that will not require a return visit from your electrician.

If you've got solar now, or plan to in the near future, we suggest exploring our E2 Core or E2 Pluschargers, which come complete with built-in solar diversion.

Important notes

The E2 Flex does not come with the Tesla charge port integration or the Tesla battery state of charge integration. For these features, please look at our E2 Plus model.

All Evnex chargers require an internet connection for continued operation. This can be provided via WiFi, 4G SIM (cellular), or Ethernet (depending on the charger model). Chargers can operate (without smart features) for up to 28 days at a time without connection.

Our favourite (and most popular) charger if you don’t have solar is the Evnex E2 Flex.

This is essentially the same high quality charger as the E2 Core and E2 Plus (see below), but it does not have the solar aware software turned on.

The smart thing about this charger is that if you ever get solar in the future, the software can be switched on by Evnex for a one-off fee of $349.

The charger has scheduling setup in the app to allow customers to charge when tariffs are cheap and also allows for easy integration with existing or future battery setups.

Another very important feature of all the Evnex chargers is Dynamic Load Balancing. This allows the charger to monitor how much power is being used at your home. If lots of power is being used in your home while the car is also charging then the EV charger will automatically slow down to ensure that your homes switchboard isn’t overloaded.

The Evnex chargers have a great 4 year warranty and top notch customer service.

They are now our go-to charger for installs around Hobart (we’ve installed over 100 in Hobart!).

The Tesla Gen3 Wall Connector charger is a great option, particularly for Teslas.

It is reliable and a great quality product.

The Tesla charger does not have solar aware charging capabilities in case you want solar in the future. It also does not have Dynamic Load Balancing, like the Evnex Flex.

However, you can set the charge speed in the Tesla charger app. This allows you to change the current from 6-30 amps before initiating a charge session. Some customers are using this feature to match the charger usage to their solar power generation - similar to a solar aware charger, just a manual process.

Tesla charges can be setup to run on 1 phase or 3 phase power.

We find customers tend to prefer the Evnex Flex charger, as it provides more features for a very similar price.

Both Evnex chargers will talk to your solar panels, provide home load balancing, and app controls.

Evnex chargers are made in New Zealand. They are tethered, which mean it has a cable already attached and ready to plug into your car.

This charger must be controlled via an app on your phone, which shows you how much solar is being generated, how much power is being used in your home and how much power is being sent to your car!

The warranty is 4 years, and the customer service is excellent.

We’ve installed over 100 Evnex chargers around Hobart now, and our customers are loving them.

Good quality product and reliable service and with a local help line.

  • Tethered (please contact us if you wish to purchase an untethered model)

Future proof, intelligent electric car charging. Zappi is the #1 best selling solar compatible charger. Designed for convenience, not compromise. Zappi is an adaptive EV charger that can take power from the grid, solar, or both.

Increasing the return on investment (ROI) for your panels and electric car, the Zappi is easy to install and user friendly. But don’t worry, if you don’t have solar panels installed, the Zappi will still operate as a standard EV charger harnessing power from the grid. Paired with the myenergi app, you can set timers to utilise economy tariffs, use the boost function, monitor your devices, and so much more.

The Zappi charger is one of the more well known charger options in Australia.

We have one installed at our home.

We love the fact that we can start a charging session without connecting to our phone and apps, and we can see on the charger screen how much solar power is being produced and used and how much is being diverted to the car battery.

Zappi chargers are also good options if you have three phase power and want to utilise that for EV charging.

However, there are some downsides.

Zappi offer limited colours, only a three year warranty (Evnex offers 4 years) and some of our customers have had some trouble with unreliable or slow customer service when there are issues.

In addition, the Zappi chargers are designed for the UK climate, so the operating temperature is not meant to go over 40 degrees.

It is important not to install Zappi chargers on north-facing sunny walls in Australia.

We love the Wallbox EV charger as well.

The Wallbox is a smart charger that can use grid, solar or battery power to charge your electric vehicle. Its nice and small allowing you to be flexible when choosing where to install your EV charger.

The charger can be controlled via an app, or we can help you set up RFID cards to turn the charger off and on.

Wallbox also has a charger that can be monetised (people pay for charging sessions), which is great for businesses, airbnbs or commercial sites. Get in touch if you want any more info about this.

Here is a commercial Wallbox charging set up for a local school, providing EV charging for staff:
