Community project: EV charging at Elizabeth College

At This is Electric, we believe the clean energy transition isn’t just about new technology.

It’s about making sure the clean energy transition is fast as well as fair, and we are including the people who will be impacted by climate change the most.

That’s why we were proud to partner with Elizabeth College on a community project in 2025 focused on solar, EV charging, sustainability, and education.

Mentoring students for the clean energy transition

This project combined classroom learning with hands-on, real-world experience, giving students practical skills while helping their school take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future.

Phil from This is Electric worked closely with electro tech students and the school’s leadership group to design an EV charging system for their school.

The sessions included analysing solar power generated by the school’s solar panels on the gym roof and the role of EV charging as a way to soak up excess solar power.

We also discussed energy efficiency, sustainability, and career pathways in the clean energy technology and electrical industry.

The goals were simple:

  • Build confidence and technical skills

  • Increase awareness of climate and energy challenges

  • Prepare students for future clean energy careers

  • Give young people a real voice in the transition they’ll be most impacted by

The sessions blended theory with practical learning, helping students connect what they learn in the classroom with real infrastructure and real outcomes for their school.

Student leadership driving change

One of the most inspiring parts of the project was the passion shown by the student leadership team, including Ewan, who played a key role in shaping the sustainability vision for the school.

What we love most about these projects is that students are actively helping design solutions, contributing ideas, and advocating for cleaner energy at their own school.

Installing EV charging at Elizabeth College

Working alongside students, we helped install EV charging stations for staff use, marking one of Elizabeth College’s first major clean energy projects.

The EV chargers serve a practical purpose, as well as a visible symbol of the school’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Community support and collaboration

Once again, this project was made possible with support from Hobart City Council and Sustainable Living Tasmania, highlighting what can happen when local government, education, not-for-profits, and industry work together.

It’s a model for how community-driven clean energy projects can educate, inspire, and create real impact.

Why clean energy education matters

We think it is critical to continue investing in the people who will maintain, expand, and benefit from clean energy technology in the future.

By involving students directly in solar and EV charging education, we’re helping grow a generation that is:

  • Skilled

  • Climate-aware

  • Empowered

  • Ready to lead the energy transition

Powering change together

We’re proud to support Elizabeth College and look forward to continuing work that strengthens education, supports community, and makes clean energy accessible to all.

If your school, council, or organisation is interested in solar, EV charging, or clean energy education projects, we’d love to help.
